Heal safer, faster & healthier.
Physical therapy before and after your surgery can be a crucial part of returning back to your normal activity at work & play.
Pre-Operative Physical Therapy
Often referred to as pre-hab, physical therapy before surgery has been shown to sharply improve post-op rehabilitation. Your Step & Spine physical therapist will help you approach your operation with as much knowledge, preparation and confidence as possible. You’ll be evaluated for muscle & joint strength, walking abilities, and physical independence. We’ll focus on making a plan to shorten your healing time & get you back to normal activity safely after your operation.
When possible, being in good physical condition before an operation will drastically improve your recovery. Pre-surgery physical therapy has the following goals:
- Get you in the best possible condition for surgery
- Strengthen & tone muscles
- Enhance stamina & increase flexibility
- Maximize the benefits and minimize the challenges that come with surgery
What do expect during pre-operative PT
For most people, two to six weeks of pre-hab is enough to prepare for surgery. Your PT will work with your schedule to design the most effective program possible leading up to your operation date. During your first appointment, we’ll conduct a complete health history and evaluation to help understand your condition. We’ll address any concerns you have about the procedure and talk about your goals after surgery. We understand the anxiety that comes with undergoing surgery. Our goal is to help you feel as comfortable and confident as possible!
Pre-hab typically starts with low-impact muscle toning exercises and stretching. Your PT will work to educate you about the musculo-skeletal structure of the part of your body affected by surgery. We’ll work with you to design an effective pre-surgery exercise plan based on your schedule and physical capabilities. Every time you come for pre-hab at Step & Spine, you’ll see the same PT, ensuring the most seamless, efficient experience possible.
Thanks to the effectiveness of presurgical exercise programs, more and more insurance & HMO plans are covering pre-operative physical therapy. We encourage all patients to check with their individual insurance companies about coverage.
Post-Operative Physical Therapy
After you’ve undergone surgery, post-operative physical therapy can begin as soon as you have permission from your physician. Your PT will focus on helping you reduce adverse effects of surgery (swelling, aching, and pain). An individualized therapeutic exercise plan will help you safely return to normal movement. We’ll address your concerns about returning to work and recreational activities.
